Calgary city council approved a safety audit Monday of the Deerfoot Trail, even though the freeway falls under provincial responsibility.
Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart said accidents on the freeway are becoming more frequent and more serious.
"The work is not being initiated by the province so we have to do it," she said.
About 150,000 vehicles travel the north-south route through east Calgary every day. This year there have been 1,900 crashes and nine deaths on the ramps alone.
Colley-Urquhart said the report's recommendations, expected in November, could range from beefing up police presence to fixing what she calls a "flawed design."
