Calgary's transit union issued its 72-hour strike notice on Monday. The union plans to hold a one-day walkout on Friday. The move will cripple the city's public transportation and could create traffic snarls downtown where thousands of commuters will be forced to take their vehicles to work. Despite the strike notice, the union and the city continued talks on Monday. The union requested a meeting after rejecting all previous offers but then issued strike notice. The walkout is scheduled for the same day as a conference is being held in Calgary. Officials with the city say alterative transportation will be provided for conference delegates. They also say the city will not lock out workers if they keep to their one-day strike on Friday.
